ABOUT

Joseph Granda is an award-winning writer, director, producer and actor whose career in film and television spans more than three decades.

He began his career as an actor, studying the Meisner technique in New York under William Alderson before working Off-Broadway and on Broadway. His film credits include Amongst Friends, A Walk in the Clouds, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Caught Up and Public Enemies. During this period, he also gained experience behind the camera as an assistant to filmmaker Abel Ferrara and as a production assistant for director Tony Scott. Those early experiences on both sides of the camera ultimately led him to focus on writing, directing and producing his own films.

Granda made his feature debut as a writer-director with The Healing Garden, released in 2021. He followed it with The Sasqualogist, a Colorado-set comedy-drama that he wrote, directed, produced and starred in. The film received multiple festival honors, including Best Film at the Winter Park Film Festival, Best Film Overall at MidWest WeirdFest and Best Comedy Feature at the North Carolina Film Festival. It subsequently received a limited theatrical release and streaming distribution.

His films are rooted in the subjects that interest him most: family, faith, fatherhood, redemption and ordinary people confronting questions larger than themselves. His work combines those themes with character-driven storytelling, humor and the resourceful independent filmmaking spirit that has defined his career.

Granda is currently developing his next feature, Out of the Flatirons, a mystery-drama set against Colorado’s Front Range. Cinematographer Michael Bonvillain, ASC—whose credits include Cloverfield, Lost and Zombieland—is attached to the project, which Granda plans to direct.

He lives and works in Colorado, where he continues to develop and produce independent films through Defenestration Films. He and his family are followers of Christ.
